Free AI Headshot Generators: What Free Actually Means in 2026

Written by the BetterPic team. Disclosure: BetterPic is one of the tools covered here. Every figure is the vendor's own published number, checked on 1 September 2026, and the places where BetterPic is the weaker option are marked.

Search for a free AI headshot generator and the results are misleading, because "free" is doing three completely different jobs in that sentence. Sorting out which one you actually want takes about a minute and saves you from the usual outcome, which is uploading twenty selfies to something that then asks for a card before showing you anything.

The three kinds of free, and who each one is for

Genuinely free, with a ceiling. Canva includes an AI headshot generator inside its photo editor at no cost. The output is fine for a profile thumbnail and not much beyond that, but nothing is gated and you are not handing over payment details. If you need a passable square image for a Slack avatar this afternoon, stop reading and use it.

A free tier of a paid tool. This is the one worth understanding, because it lets you test the thing that actually varies. BetterPic runs a free tier of up to 10 headshots at the same 4K output as its paid plans. You see how the model handles your specific face before any money moves, which matters more than any spec on a comparison table.

Paid, but refundable. Neither Aragon nor HeadshotPro offers a free tier. Both publish a refund path instead: HeadshotPro a 100% money-back guarantee with no expiry and no questions asked, Aragon a full refund provided you have not downloaded the photos, plus a free regeneration if you would rather retry. Functionally this is a trial with a card held against it, and for many people it is the better deal, because you get the full output rather than a sample.

Why testing on your own face is the whole point

Generated headshots fail unevenly. Across every tool on the market the reliable failure modes are the same three: strong prescription glasses, tightly curled hair, and darker skin tones. No vendor's landing page mentions any of them, and no sample gallery shows them, because sample galleries are curated.

This is why the free-versus-refundable distinction matters more than price. A $29 tool that fails on your face is worse value than a $79 tool that works, and the only way to find out is to run yourself through it. Whichever route you take, do that before committing a team budget.

What free tiers do not fix

Two things stay true whatever you pay.

Resolution only matters if you print. LinkedIn renders profile photos at 400 x 400 pixels, and at most 800 x 800 when clicked, so every tool clears that on its cheapest tier. Printing is different: at 300 DPI you need roughly 2,400 pixels on the long edge for an eight-inch print. Aragon's Basic package outputs 896 x 1088, about three inches. HeadshotPro's standard output is a normal JPEG with 4K as a paid upgrade.

Speed is a real trade-off, and here BetterPic is the slowest. Aragon and HeadshotPro both land near 30 minutes, HeadshotPro sometimes 15. BetterPic takes one to two hours. If you need the photo inside the hour, the free tier does not help you and the other two are simply better at that job.

The short version

Need something free right now and good enough for a thumbnail: Canva. Want to see how a serious tool handles your face before paying: BetterPic's free tier. Want the full output with a written way out if it disappoints: HeadshotPro or Aragon, both of which publish refund policies that BetterPic does not.

And if this is for a group rather than one person, none of the above is the right frame. Consistency across faces beats quality on any single face, and that is a different kind of purchase with per-seat pricing and data-protection paperwork attached.
